With the October 4th Ballykelly Jet meeting called off Seamus was quick to invite us to Letterkenny for Jet flying. Everyone already had their models checked and charged so they were ready to fly.
The weather turned out excellent with a gentle breeze straight down the runway. 6 Jets made 21 flights through the afternoon with up to 3 in the air at a time. Smooth Jet syle aerobatics were the focus for the day with Matthew's list close to hand (see below) and an excellent sky. The Harpoon was seen doing very low passes down the runway upright and inverted; Boomerangs were performing neat Derry turns in both directions and the L39 has extended flight time through the effective use of a small hopper tank on the wing removed just before take off. Loops, 1/2 reverse Cubans and four point rolls at high speed down the runway were the order of the day for all pilots. Matthew had kindly provided some schedules for us to work on: Basic 1) Takeoff as per WJM 2) Straight and level for full length of sky 3) Rectangular Circuit (either square corners or race track) 4) Procedure turn 5) Circuit in opposite direction to that of #3 6) Procedure Turn 7) Low Pass 8) Figure of 8 9) Landing as per WJM Intermediate 1) Takeoff as per WJM 2) 2 small Square Circuits (50m - 100m sides) 3) 1 Loop 4) 1 Roll downwind 5) 2 Figure of 8s 6) Slow Low Pass 7) Inverted Straight and level across the sky 8) 4 Point Roll 9) Landing Advanced (as per BMFA Jet C Cert) 1) Start up and Taxi Out 2) Takeoff and complete a circuit with an aborted landing (not a low pass) in the final leg 3) Fly a figure eight with crossover in front of pilot 4) One inside Loop 5) Two Derry Turns, one from each direction 6) Perform one full speed, low pass at a height below 10 metres 7) Fly a reversal / Split S 8) Performs a dirty pass below 20m 9) Fly a rectangular approach and land with a safe straight roll out 10) Taxi back and stop, shutdown engine Pick 4 of 10 and insert between 3 & 8 1) High alpha pass, height below 20m 2) Touch & Go 3) Vertical Roll (number / direction to be agreed) 4) Stall Turn 5) Knife edge pass (canopy in) 6) Four point roll 7) Slow roll 8) Tail slide 9) Cobra 10) Rolling circle |
